It may be some sort of Java script thing that got loaded into the registry. I think it had something to do with Windows Genuine Advantage. Had the same problem with updates not working and telling me about kb/2497281 but could not fix it going by microsoft instructions. Unselect any items relating to the offending adware > click APPLY > OK. I tried starting and stopping the auto update server.
